What Is 401 Band?
401 Band is a free musician classifieds board for Rhode Island and the surrounding region. We aggregate "musician wanted" and "musician available" listings from across the web — Craigslist, BandMix, find-a-musician.com, musiciansconnect.net, and more — and present them in one clean, searchable place.
No sign-up required, no algorithms pushing paid listings, no cover charge. Just local musicians looking for each other.
Rhode Island's Music Scene
For a state you can drive across in under an hour, Rhode Island punches well above its weight musically. Providence has long been a magnet for artists and musicians — part of it is the concentration of creative schools (RISD, Brown, URI), part of it is New England's broader DIY culture, and part of it is simply that the city's gritty, affordable character has historically made room for people who want to make things.
The venues tell part of the story: the Columbus Theatre's restored 1926 ballroom in the West End, the intimate basement energy at Dusk, the all-ages creative hub of AS220. Newport anchors the summer calendar with one of America's oldest jazz festivals — founded in 1954 — and the legendary Newport Folk Festival, established in 1959 and still going strong. South County has its own regional scene. Pawtucket and East Providence have studios and rehearsal spaces that have hosted working bands for decades.
What the scene has always lacked is good infrastructure for musicians to find each other. The classifieds are fragmented — a handful of posts on Craigslist, profiles buried in BandMix, threads in Facebook groups that scroll out of reach in days. 401 Band exists to fix that.
How It Works
We monitor public musician classifieds from multiple sources and curate the results into a single, filterable feed. Listings are updated regularly and stale or expired posts are removed to keep the board fresh.
You can filter by:
- Type — band seeking a musician, or a musician available to join
- Genre — rock, jazz, punk, country, folk, metal, blues, americana, and more
- Instrument — guitar, bass, drums, vocals, keys, horns, fiddle, and more
- Keyword — free-text search across titles, descriptions, and locations
Every listing links directly back to the original post on its source platform. We don't collect contact information — all outreach happens through the original listing, keeping things exactly as the poster intended.

Our primary focus is Rhode Island — Providence, Newport, South County, Pawtucket, Warwick, Woonsocket, and every town in between. We also include listings from musicians in adjacent areas (southeastern Massachusetts, the Providence metro, southwestern Connecticut) when they're actively seeking collaborators in the RI region. Music doesn't stop at the state line.
